Igor Corman about balance between majority and opposition in Moldova

The relations between the parliamentary majority and the opposition in Moldova are influenced by the geopolitical context and the situation in the region, Head of Parliament Igor Corman said in his speech in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament that is taking place in Oslo on September 11-12, IPN reports, quoting the Parliament’s press service.

Igor Corman spoke about the impact of the regional context on the political situation in the country, the European integration process and the factors on which the relations between the government and the opposition depend in Moldova. He stated that it’s not easy to ensure and maintain a balance between the power and the opposition, especially in such a young democracy as Moldova’s. “The balance between the power and the opposition depends on the level of democracy in society, the political culture, politicians’ experience and the developments in the region,” said the Speaker, noting that the several examples of cooperation and common legislative accomplishments are rather an exception.

According to Igor Corman, the agenda of the national political parties, including the relations between the majority and the opposition, are influenced by the geopolitical context and the situation in the region, the economic sanctions imposed by Russia on Moldova and the tragic developments in Ukraine. “There are political forces that aim to change Moldova’s European agenda after the parliamentary elections of this November. It is an attempt to gain votes based on anti-European propaganda,” he stated. The Speaker expressed his regret at the fact that these things happen now, after the country obtained a liberalized visa regime and signed the Association Agreement with the EU, which were objectives set by the government and the opposition in 2005.

“Despite these difficulties, the process of Moldova’s association with the EU was launched. The signing and ratification of the Association Agreement are a solid foundation for Moldova’s future and for the country’s democratization and modernization,” stated the Speaker.

Igor Corman expressed his conviction that the transfer of experience in the European integration process from the EU member states will continue to influence the development of all the areas in Moldova, including of the whole political system so that mature cooperation relations are established between the parliamentary majority and the opposition.

While in Oslo, the Head of Parliament had a meeting with the President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert. Igor Corman thanked the German authorities for the constant support provided to Moldova in the European integration process and asked them to make sure that the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU is ratified in the immediate future.
