Amid the rising prices and inflation, we need a productive dialogue with arguments between the government and the opposition so that those who bear responsibility could take the most appropriate decisions, while the citizens are correctly informed, said expert Igor Boțan. “The government and the opposition should also communicate with the citizens. The communication of the government with the business community is also important so that the solutions offered by the government are comprehensible to the businesspeople. Otherwise, we risk placing the businesses in a difficult situation,” the standing expert of IPN’s project stated in a public debate on the issue staged by IPN News Agency.
Asked about the political interest of parties in their approaches to the prices and inflation, Igor Boțan said the fight between the government and the opposition is given for influencing the voters and this is absolutely normal. “What I want as a citizen: I’m convinced that there are computerized models in this state and if the Socialists come up with proposals to act one way or another with regard to taxes, excise duties and VAT, why can’t we use these models to see what effects these can have from fiscal viewpoint, from economic viewpoint and the viewpoint of health of enterprises? There are programs that enable, when you come up with proposals to act one way or another, to introduce these data in the computer so as to see the effects at the end and you, as economists and specialists, would tell us what the political consequences would be from the viewpoint of the economy, based on the figures you would obtain based on the application of models. I like when the opposition presses the government or it will be very bad,” said the expert.
According to him, the citizens wait to see a competition of ideas between the government and the opposition. This competition should be based on calculations that would show which of the sides is right and which can ensure more favorable prospects for the Republic of Moldova. In such a situation, measure should be taken to enable the businesses to remain afloat. The people should hope that the situation will improve and things will return to normality as these giant inflation figures would seem only a nightmare then.
The public debate entitled “Prices and inflation considered from political, economic and social angles” was the 249th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
