Igor Botan: We should stop being naïve and shrewd

The representatives of nongovernmental organizations should stop being naïve and should not believe the current political class and support the declared pro-European parties only for fear that pro-Russian forces could come to power, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT Igor Botan said in the public debate “What does civil society keep silent about? Views about the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition” that was staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

Igor Botan said the civil society is the expression of the middle class, while Moldova, being the poorest country in Europe, does not have a middle class. “If the living standards improve, the middle class will develop and the people will look with other eyes around when they go out. There should be no stray dogs and cruelty to animals and the places should be clean. The people will organize themselves to deal with such issues and will not ask this from the government,” he stated.

“We know that the parties are considered vehicles that take shrewd persons to welfare. This is the people’s perception and this is so indeed. If we hadn’t been shrewd now, in the created situation, we wouldn’t have had to support forces that are negotiating a new government coalition for the reason that they declare themselves pro-European. I have no interest as I know what they are capable of. These forces received a slap from Stefan Fule (ex-European commissioner – e.n.), who told them to stop hiding behind the EU’s shield. And here is the most interesting moment. We say that they are thieves, but they are pro-European thieves. These say that they stole and will continue to steal, but we will not dare to remove them for fear of the pro-Russian forces. But maybe they themselves support the pro-Russian parties so that they could scare us with the danger posed by these?”

Igor Botan also said that we should decide what we shall do with those who during five years turned the country from a ‘success story’ into a ‘captured state’: will remove them and will hold early elections even if there is the risk that pro-Russian parties will come to power or will leave them to power for another three years. If the situation does not improve until the ordinary elections of 2018, the pro-Russian forces will win not a simple majority, but a constitutional majority.

The expert is sure that if early parliamentary elections are held, the people will make a correct choice as they now know about the stealing of the billion from the banking system and what the declared pro-European forces are capable of. Igor Botan wants the people to give a no-confidence vote to those who governed during the last few years.

The public debate “What does civil society keep silent about? Views about the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition” is the 44th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged with support from the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”
