Igor Botan: We either become citizens or will be human residue

The solutions to the crisis faced now by Moldova are defined in the Constitution and holding early parliamentary elections is the best solution, Igor Botan, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), said in the public debate:  “The post of Prime Minister as a bone of contention. Why?”, which is the 48th installment of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debates” staged by IPN in partnership with Radio Moldova.

The project’s permanent expert noted that to understand what follows, we must understand why the politicians generated this government crisis and things then will become clear. “These politicians caused the crisis not for going towards early elections but for arranging things in such a way as those who are said to be holding control in this country could profit. The constitutional provisions will be probably ignored,” he stated.

Igor Botan considers that the early elections are the best solution to the current crisis. “I’m not afraid that one political force or another will win. I hope that this crisis experienced by Moldova is a very good lesson for the people. We either become citizens of this country, express interest in the public affairs, react and intervene so that the political class does not leave the path set by the Constitution or we will go from crisis to crisis and will witness the best minds leaving this country. What will be there in Moldova? Only human residue will remain here as the best and most experienced will go abroad,” he said.

According to him, the current politicians discredit everything the European integration means. “Today we have an absolutely new situation, when the heads of parliamentary groups dare to caution the head of state. President Timofti must have his hands free and must not be threatened. The way in which they treated the head of state is a slap given to each citizen of this state and these people tell us that they want to name a Premier who will take the country out of the crisis,” stated Igor Botan.

Asked why the leaders of the parties that won the elections are not nominated for premiership, the expert said that those who headed the Government were dismissed on suspicion of acts of corruption. “The post of Prime Minister should be held by persons who enjoy the greatest confidence among the people. In our country, the people with the highest anti-rating want to become Premier. Why? We can guess – when you own a media holding, you can use it to transform the anti-rating into rating. In a month or two, this can send to jail all his enemies and would stage a media show to present this as fight against corruption,” said Igor Botan.

The public debate “The post of Prime Minister as a bone of contention. Why?” is the 48th installment of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debates” that are supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
