Igor Boțan: Two years after launch of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, there are hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides

Although the Russian Federation initially wanted this war to be classed as an internal one, in which Russia allegedly had to get involved, now things are clear. This pretext is false and the war is one of conquest on the part of Russia, the permanent expert of IPN’s project Igor Boțan stated in a public debate titled “The war that blew up the World”.

As regards the impact of this war, the expert explained that this war caused human losses estimated at hundreds of thousands of casualties, destabilized regional economies and even the economy of the European Union.

Referring to the character of the fighting taking place in Ukraine, the political pundit said: “We see air strikes, strikes from naval vessels. Information warfare persists. Unfortunately, Russia’s war against Ukraine is also accompanied by diversionary and terrorist actions. It is enough to remember Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, cities that have been wiped out.”

According to Igor Boțan, two years after Russia launched its attack on Ukraine, this war is described as a large-scale one and was also mentioned in the recent position of the European Union, which applies the 13th package of individual and economic sanctions against Russia.

“Why is it considered a full-scale war? Because the entire territory of Ukraine is frequently attacked with missiles, with blockages of transport routes. It should be noted here that Russia has blocked grain exports from Ukraine, causing food crises all over the world. Ukraine managed, however, to unlock it, demonstrating capacity to oppose it not only militarily, but also in terms of trade strategies,” said the expert.

“How is Ukraine helped to resist? This is another question that’s on the agenda. Not being directly involved in the war, there are groups of states that are doing everything possible to help Ukraine,” said the political analyst, referring in particular to the group of states that are part of the Rammstein Club, which recently met to discuss how Ukraine can be helped to resist and emerge victorious from the unjust, large-scale war that Russia started on February 24, 2022.

The public debate entitled “The war that blew up the World” was the 300th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates”, which is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
