The Government of Moldova can learn a lesson from the situation in Ukraine, which showed that the sudden change of priorities as regards the country’s development course can generate people’s protests, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy Igor Botan said in the public debate “Priorities of the political class and Moldovan society in an electoral year. Position of the parliamentary parties” that was staged by IPN Agency.

“An antioligarchic protest in Ukraine degenerated into a national one. This was a pretext for Russia to deploy its army for defending its people. The government must be responsible. If conflicts appear in society, the best solution is to dissipate tensions. It would be good to have protection. We must understand to what extent our system is oligarchic,” said the expert of IPN’s project.

Igor Botan said the elections are coming and it’s easy to see parties’ priorities judging by the campaigns they carry out. “The broadest campaign is the campaign of the ruling parties. It is called Euro-information. The fact that a massive information campaign is conducted in an electoral year makes us think that the ruling parties want one more mandate,” he stated.

He added that the setting of priorities does not mean that they do not have a broad view on what is going on. It means that having limited resources, they will do what is more important. “My opinion is that a line should be drawn and things should be summed up,” said Igor Botan.

The debate “Priorities of the political class and Moldovan society in an electoral year. Position of the parliamentary parties” is the 27th of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debates”. IPN Agency has staged these debates for the third year, with the support of the German foundation Hanns Seidel and in cooperation with Radio Moldova.
