Igor Botan: Stake in presidential election is very big

The analysis of costs sustained in the election campaign shows the stake in the presidential elections is very big even if everyone says that the office of President is not the most important one in the Republic of Moldova, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT) Igor Botan stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe, IPN reports.

According to the expert, there are three categories of candidates of the 12 registered. “We see five very rich candidates, two candidates who reported zero costs and another two candidates who didn’t submit financial reports to the Central Election Commission,” stated Igor Botan. Financial reports weren’t filed by Iurie Leanca and Maia Laguta.

The largest part of the costs goes on TV advertisements. “If we refer to candidate Marian Lupu, we see that 80% of the 15 million lei collected and spent by this in two weeks represent costs for television advertisements. So, the money from one pocket of the party colleague is honestly put in the other pocket of the party colleague despite the roadmap that promised de-monopolization of the media sector in the Republic of Moldova,” stated the political expert.

According to the ADEPT executive director, some of the TV channels intentionally charge large sums of money for a minute of advertising. “But we anticipated and said that when the money is transferred from one pocket to another, despite the roadmap, these limits are set on purpose so that no one except for the beloved candidate has access to the four TV channels that cover the whole territory of the Republic of Moldova, for example,” said Igor Botan. According to him, this circle can be broken with few resources, but with very well-thought-out messages.
