ICT regulator issues first 4G licenses

The National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology has issued the telecoms carriers Moldcell and Orange Moldova with licenses for using radio frequencies/channels for providing fourth-generation (4G) services, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from the agency, the companies came into possession of the licenses after transferring the tax of €10 million in Moldovan lei to the state budget. At the end of September, the ICT regulator sent letters to the providers of public mobile phone services and networks (Orange Moldova, Moldcell, and Moldtelecom), inviting them to submit applications to get 4G licenses. Under the terms of the license, Moldcell and Orange Moldova are obliged to ensure the provision of the minimum set of 4G services and to launch these services within a year of the license issue date. They also have to cover areas inhabited by at least 25% of Moldova’s population with 4G services by December 31, 2015. The 4G services ensure mobile Internet connection speeds of up to 100 Mbps, which is several times higher than the speed offered through 3G networks. The new generation of technology considerably improves the quality of access to mobile Internet, facilitates interactivity and the capacity to transmit data, the organization of mobile videoconferences and the utilization of other modern mobile telephone applications.
