Iargara town benefits from clean water
A project to clear the soil and underground water of oil products and agricultural chemicals has been implemented in Iargara town of Leova district during the last three years. The project is a cooperation between the Czech Republic and Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to a communique from the Czech Embassy, a ceremonial completion of the project and handover of a groundwater treatment facility to the town of Iargara took place on October 7.
Local residents can use the cleaned water to irrigate their gardens. The system operation prevents further spreading of oil pollution, thus protecting local wells, the only source of drinking water in the town, from contamination.
The project has been carried out using funds from the Czech Republic's budget earmarked for the development of cooperation with Moldova. The total cost of the project is US$750,000.
Moldova obtains a unique system, which, within the test operation, allowed drawing out more than 2,500 m3 of contaminated groundwater and separating more than 4,000 litres of oil substances from this water. Relatively simple in operation, yet effective technology was used to carry out the project. It could be used in other areas facing similar pollution problems.
