Human rights education can help Moldova ensure road to EU is irreversible

The human rights education can change the mentality and behaviors and the future generation depends on the quality of this, Ombudswoman for Children’s Rights Maia Bănărescu stated in the Human Rights Forum that is held in Chisinau, IPN reports.

“It is important for the Republic of Moldova to create efficient mechanisms to ensure quality of the highest standard in the field of education. I want to say that when the children will know their rights and will realize that a right of theirs is violated and the person to blame will be held accountable, they will gain confidence that will accompany them throughout life. This way we will be able to speak about the observance of human rights in the Republic of Moldova,” said Maia Bănărescu.

The head of the Parliament’s commission on culture, education, research, youth, sport and the media Liliana Nicolăescu Onofrei said the human rights education should help the Republic of Moldova to make the road of European integration irreversible. “We must ensure a culture of human rights and we have a lot of work to do here as society. I would like the promotion of human rights to become an intrinsic part of the activity of media institutions. We all have obligations,” stated the MP.

Secretary of state of the Ministry of Education and Research Adriana Cazacu said their Ministry is responsible for the working out and promotion of policies on the role of the human rights education in the process of strengthening democratic governance. In this regard, Education for Society was implemented as a school subject to help the students gain knowledge and develop the skills they need to become active and responsible citizens.

Karin Borovic, Head of the Development Cooperation Section of the Embassy of Sweden in Chisinau, noted that even if we live in a world with many possibilities, the people still need to be explained their rights and freedoms. “In our time, we regrettably still have to remind and to educate society every day on the rights and freedoms of each citizen. We unfortunately experience a number of crises that affect the human rights,” stated Karin Borovic.

Veaceslav Tofan, executive director of Amnesty International Moldova, said the human rights education will not produce results immediately, but will lay the basis of sustainable social and economic development.

The Human Rights Forum 2022 is taking place in Chisinau on December 6-7. It centers on the integration of the human rights- and equality-based approach into Moldova’s Agenda of Accession to the EU.
