The human rights defenders the criminal cases against whom were sent to court will be supported in the framework of a project initiated by the Legal Resources Center from Moldova. The EU-funded project will be implemented until the end of January 2024, IPN reports.

The project is aimed at ensuring greater transparency that is vital for exposing the errors of the judicial system of the Republic of Moldova. Legal Resources Center programs director Sorina Macrinici said the project covers all the target groups that contribute to the protection of human rights in the Republic of Moldova.

“The presented project is co-financed by Sweden. The promotion of human rights and of human rights activists is a commitment for any person of the modern society,” Daniela Vidaicu, of the Swedish Embassy, stated in the project presentation event.

The representative of the Geneva-based International Commission of Jurists Roisin Pillay said this project supports the human rights defenders. “We support the human rights defenders and take part in the legal proceedings involving them. We later transmit this information to international organizations in Chisinau, such as OSCE, UN, the EU representative offices in Moldova. These should know the situation of human rights defenders in Moldova individually and also the problems of the justice system existing in Moldova. This will have a positive impact on the advocacy efforts in Moldova,” stated Roisin Pillay.

Rodica Iordanov, executive director of EcoContact Association, in the event said the environmental activists witness a lot of human rights violations. She reminded of several cases started against environmentalists, which haven’t been finished yet. “We will lay emphasis on the development of the personal capacities of activists. These persons should have clear notions of justice and should know how to defend oneself, to protect their sources and data and to act in cases of harassment and intimidation,” noted Rodica Iordanov.
