Cases of torture in police stations continue to exist, with five cases being registered in the last month alone, says Tudor Ciorap, the vice chairman of the National Center for Investigation and Human Rights Defense. The latest case, according to him, was registered at the Comrat Police Commissariat, where the local police on August 13 arrested a man named Buzilov for allegedly riding a motorcycle without a license and ill-treated him. In 2009, the European Court of Human Rights awarded Buzilov €20,000 damages for being tortured, explained Tudor Ciorap. On July 27, the Riscani police arrested a man named Eugeniu Malasin, who was taken to the Emergency Hospital with his jaw broken after two days of reported torture. Another case concerns a man named Feodor Raiu, arrested by the Ialoveni police. He suffered medium bodily injuries at the hands of the police. Anatol Frinea also received medium injuries after being allegedly tortured by the Centru police. Tudor Ciorap went on to add that the police often drive personal cars with Interior Ministry number plates in breach of the law.
