“Are you for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union?” – this will be the question asked at the constitutional referendum that is to be held in autumn, simultaneously with the presidential election, said the chairwoman of the Parliament’s Legal Commission for Appointments and Immunities Veronica Roșca. According to her, the proposal to initiate the referendum on the revision of the Constitution is to be submitted today to the Constitutional Court, IPN reports.

Veronica Roșca told a press briefing that the draft to amend the Constitution aims to reaffirm the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and declare the integration into the European Union Moldova’s strategic objective. “Thus, it is proposed to complete the preamble of the Constitution with two new paragraphs. At the same time, it is proposed to complete the Constitution with a new title – Title V prime “Integration into the European Union”. It is proposed the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the founding treaties of the European Union and to the acts to review the founding treaties of the European Union,” stated the chairwoman of the Legal Commission.

Veronica Roșca noted that the initiation of the constitutional referendum is thus launched today. “The next stage will concern the issuance of an opinion by the Constitutional Court. Then, we must present to Parliament the draft decision that must contain the date of the constitutional referendum and the actual question that will be put to the citizens,” said the MP.

The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union was announced by President Maia Sandu at an event where the head of state informed that she would run for a new presidential term.
