How much is an Easter meal?

The Moldovans started to make purchases for the Easter holidays. Each day, the Central Market in Chisinau is full of buyers that want to prepare a feast for God’s Return to Life. As every year before Easter, the prices of food products in Chisinau markets hit records. Asked by Info-Prim Neo’s reporter, a number of housewives said that they intend to spend between several hundred and several thousand lei for the extensive Easter meal. One thing is for sure – the essential things needed to prepare the traditional Easter dishes will cost minimum 400 lei. The beverages, fruit and confectionery will cost at least 100 lei more. The traditional Easter lamb is sold on the Central Market for 55 lei a kilogram. A lamb weighting 3-4 kilograms costs 220 lei. Besides lamb, the housewives have to purchase a lot of other things. The eggs must be obligatorily present on the Easter table. Ten eggs are sold for 16.5 lei to 19 lei, in contrast to 14 lei before. A packet of egg dye costs at least 2 lei. A set of five colors costs 7 lei. The housewives that do not have time to bake matzos and pound cakes, can purchase them from bakeries and baker’s shops. The smallest pound cake of 200 grams can be purchased for 10 lei. A pound cake “Panetone” prepared according to Italian methods costs over 70 lei. Any Orthodox Christian wants to have fresh ewe’s green cheese, green onion, tomatoes, cucumbers and radish on the Easter table. A kilogram of green cheese costs between 40 and 45 lei. The smallest bunch of onion costs 2 lei. One kilogram of tomatoes is sold for 28 lei on average, the cucumbers for 24 lei, the radish for 14 lei/kg. The families that want a richer meal can purchase poultry for 40 lei/kg, chicken fillet for 65 lei/kg, minced beef and pork for 60 lei/kg, pork for 85 lei/kg, beef for 80 lei/kg, mutton for 38 lei/kg. The boiled sausages can be bought for at least 60 lei/kg, the semi-smoked sausages for 70 lei/kg, while the dried sausages for at least 100 lei/kg. The pork smoke-dried salt meat sells for 88 lei/kg, while the smoked pork muscle for 100 lei/kg. A kilogram of pressed cheese costs minimum 87 lei/kg on the Central Market. It is not excluded that the prices of foodstuffs sold on the markets will reach new heights on the eve of Easter. Before Low Sunday, the Moldovans will start purchasing plates, cups, towels and other things for “alms”.
