How are union and stamp of mayor’s office related? “Voievod” and “Urmasii lui Stefan” seek punishment for wrongdoers

Two public associations that defend the statehood of the Republic of Moldova demand to hold accountable the mayors, local councilors and other local public functionaries who recently signed symbolic statements on the union with Romania.

Representatives of the associations “Voievod” and “Urmasii lui Stefan” (”Stephan’s Followers”) in a news conference at IPN said that on February 7 they will file official petitions to the law enforcement and security agencies, including the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS) and the Prosecutor’s Office, whereby they will demand to punish all those involved in these acts that they call “treason” and “territorial separatism”. The local functionaries are requested to explain on the basis of what legal reasons the stamps of mayor’s offices were put on the given statements.

Dumitru Roibu, head of the Youth Movement “Urmasii lui Stefan”, said the local public functionaries are obliged by law and oath to defend the sovereignty, independence and integrity of the Republic of Moldova. “If we refer to the legal effects of such statements, we understand that they are null. These are only some of the political moments and they were used to increase this wave of unionism in the country,” stated Dumitru Roibu. He added that if the signatories of the statements didn’t want these to have legal effects, but only political ones, this does not mean that they will not have these effects.

Roibu expressed his bewilderment at the inaction of the SIS and prosecutors who are obliged not only to stop, but also to prevent actions aimed against Moldova’s statehood. He said he does no understand the “double standards” of the representatives of the Democratic Party who sign such statements at the local level or tolerate them, but simultaneously criticize ex-President Traian Basescu, who is now president of honor of the National Unity Party, for his unionist statements.

“Voievod” head Nicolae Pascaru also said he does not understand why the SIS does not act as promptly as when inhabitants of villages from the right bank of the Nistru several years ago tried to obtain the so-called Transnistrian nationality so as to pay less for gas. He described the unionist statements as a blow given to all the citizens in a multiethnic Moldova. “What is the most interesting is the fact that these mayors are from the Democratic Party,” stated Pascaru. “For us, it is unacceptable to see mayors from Iasi or senators from Bucharest show disrespect for the Republic of Moldova as they become directly involved in the destruction of this state.”

President Igor Dodon condemned the unionist statements, promising to convoke the Supreme Security Council to discuss the issue. Last week, Nicolae Pascaru and Dumitru Robu received, alongside others, state awards from the President on the occasion of the “constitution of Moldovan statehood” on February 2, 1365.
