Hot weather can affect people suffering from cardiac diseases, old people and children

The hot weather prevailing in Moldova can most seriously affect the people suffering from cardio-vascular diseases, the old people and the children. Doctors warn them to observe the precaution rules so as to avoid sunstroke or aggravation of the illnesses. Eufalia Negreata, doctor-coordinator at the Emergency Service in Chisinau, said that the persons forming part of the risk groups must not go out between 11.00 and 17.00 during dog days. If the exposure to sunlight is inevitable, it is recommended to wear hats, sunglasses and clothes from natural fabrics, and to drink as much liquid as possible. Doctors warn that the head should be maximally protected from solar radiation. In case of burns, these should be treated with milk or aloe or covered with slices of carrot, cucumber or potatoes. The people should drink more than three liters of water daily and avoid eating food rich in fats, consuming alcohol and drinking too much coffee. To restore the amounts of water, mineral salts and vitamins lost as a result of perspiration, it is recommended to drink warm infusions of horsemint, common elder, horse gowan, all-saints’-wort and stinging nettle sweetened with sugar or artificial sweet substances that quench the thirst. During hot, dry days, the consumed food should contain few calories. If the sunstroke causes swoon, the victim must be taken to a shadowed place. He should be given water to drink if he is conscious. The Emergency Service should be called if he is unconscious for several minutes.
