The Honor Cemetery of Romanian Soldiers in Tabara village of Orhei district was inaugurated on May 17, when it was celebrated the Romanian Heroes’ Day, after being renovated with the assistance of the Culture and Military History Center of the Ministry of Defense of Moldova and the National Office of Heroes’ Memory of Romania, IPN reports.
The event involved Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ionita, secretary of state responsible for the development of human resources, military education and resource planning at the Ministry of Defense of Moldova Vladimir Iliev, Romania’s military attaché in Moldova, colonel Cristi Ladaniuc and others.
Daniel Ionita underlined the importance of the day when the Romanian heroes, both known and unknown, who died on the battlefield are commemorated. These were inspired by the national ideals, such as freedom, independence, defense and reintegration of the nation. The powerful nations are those who do not forget their heroes, and Romania, which appeared from the sacrifices made on battlefields, is such a nation.
Cristi Ladaniuc said that after 1944 this cemetery had the fate of the other cemeteries of Romanian heroes, being destroyed by the Soviet authorities. Before the Romanian Army troops withdrew, one of the regiment commanders left a list of the soldiers killed in the region to the abbot of the Tabara monastery. This was made public after 1993, when a group of Nistru war veterans decided to renovate the cemetery. These identified a part of the graves. The branch in Oradea of the “Pro-Basarabia si Bucovina” Foundation erected an obelisk with the names of those killed on the territory of the cemetery.
A group of priests led by His Holiness Petru, Archbishop of Chisinau, Metropolitan Bishop of Bessarabia and Exarch of Lands, held a religious ceremony.
The graves of almost 90 known and unknown Romanian soldiers who were killed in World War II are there at the Cemetery of Romanian Heroes.
The Heroes’ Day is celebrated in Romania each year on the Ascension.
