Honey prices rise on drop in production

This year, beekeepers managed to collect 1700-2000 tonnes of honey, compared to last year's 3000. Andrei Zagareanu, president of the Beekeepers' Association “Apis Mellifera”, told IPN that prices are already rising.

This year's weather conditions interfered with the production of pollen. The drought that hit the center of the country, where plants had little pollen, is the main cause behind the scarce collection of honey.

Local honey prices have already increased. A kilogram of acacia honey, the most demanded variety, costs 70 lei or more.

Most of the Moldovan honey is exported, about 70% of collected amount. Andrei Zagareanu says that the EU is the destination of almost all exports.

He added that bees will collect honey until the end of the months because recent rains reinvigorated the plans that still had flowers and this will ensure bees can store winter provisions.
