Homage to soldiers buried at Memorial Complex “Cemetery of Heroes”

The soldiers killed in battle during World War II, who were buried at the Memorial Complex “Cemetery of Heroes”, were remembered in Chisinau on May 14. Dozens of people of different ages, accompanied by soldiers and the presidential orchestrate, marched from the Monument to Deportees located in the square of the Railway Terminal up to the Memorial Complex. There, a group of priests held a service to commemorate the dead soldiers, IPN reports.
 
The organizers of the event – members of the Committee for Saving the Memorial Complex “Cemetery of Heroes” – said that this way they want to remind the young people about the soldiers killed in battle. The Committee’s head Vasile Zaiat said that about 3,000 people were buried at this cemetery, 1,000 of whom were identified. These are Romanian, Russian, Austrian, Czech, French, Polish, German, Hungarian and other soldiers.

At the “Cemetery of Heroes”, there were buried also 16 Polish soldiers who were killed during First World War. President of the Polish Union in Moldova Vasili Kazimirovici said that 12 of the Polish soldiers were identified. He noted that they are proud of the ancestors who fought in these wars and each year come to commemorate them.

During the First World War, over 400 Romanian soldiers were buried in this cemetery, while after 1941 there were buried 96 Romanian soldiers killed in World War II. Attending the commemorative event, the head of the Vaslui County Council Dumitru Buzatu said that such events are significant for history as this way they render homage to all the soldiers who fought for the homeland.
