Holy Week has started

The Orthodox Christians entered Holy Week, which is the last week of Lent and the week before Easter. It is a time to commemorate and enact the suffering (Passion) and death of Jesus through various observances and services of worshipthe, Pavel Borshevski, the priest of the Chisinau-based church “Saint Dumitru”, has told Info-Prim Neo According to the priest, during the first three days of this week the people remember the things they have done in their life and what contribution they made, while on the last days they pray to have their sins forgiven and take communion. The days between Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday are known as Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday. The Gospels of these days recount events which occurred on the corresponding days between Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and his Last Supper. On the Great and Holy Monday or Great Monday, the Church commemorates the fig tree, which was cursed and withered by the Lord. The fruitless fig trees is a symbol of judgment that will befall those who do not bring forth the fruits of repentance, said Pavel Borshevski. On Holy Tuesday, it is commemorated the Parable of the Ten Virgins, which forms one of the themes of the first three days of Holy Week, with its teaching about vigilance, and Christ as the Bridegroom. The theme of Holy and Great Wednesday is the commemoration of the sinful woman who anointed Jesus before his Crucifixion and Burial; a second theme is the agreement to betray Jesus made by Judas Iscariot. Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Christ and his Eleven Apostles and the institution of the Eucharist and the Mass. The ceremony of the Washing of Feet will normally be performed in monasteries and cathedrals. Because of the joy of the Institution of the Eucharist, on this day alone during Holy Week wine and oil are permitted at meals. On Good Friday, the Church mourns for Christ’s death, reveres the Cross, and marvels at his life for his obedience until death. Because the sacrifice of Jesus through his crucifixion is commemorated on this day, the Divine Liturgy (the sacrifice of bread and wine) is not celebrated on Great Friday. Holy and Great Friday is observed as a strict fast, and adult Christians are expected to abstain from all food and drink the entire day to the extent that their health permits. Holy Saturday is a day of silence and prayer which commemorates the dead Christ in the tomb. No Mass is celebrated. The celebration of Easter may begin after sundown on what is therefore liturgically Easter Sunday. Candles are lit at the Resurrection Service and the faithful sing Jesus has Risen from the dead. The Resurrection takes place at midnight, when the New Church Year begins.
