HIV/AIDS high-risk groups remain without support
The groups of persons at the highest risk for HIV/AIDS in Moldova are monitored with support from foreign donors, and when the donors leave the country, these persons remain vulnerable, says the president of a specialized NGO.
According to Ala Iatco, of the Union for HIV prevention and Harm Reduction, even if there is plenty of information on the risks of the disease, the youth remain the major segment at risk due to casual sexual relations as well as to the use of injection drugs, whose incidence rises every year.
Ala Iatco says that a number of experts from Moldova and Ukraine have developed an action plan to be proposed to the Government for the periods when there won't be foreign financing.
The high-risk groups include persons who engage in unprotected sexual relations and change their partners often, including men who have sex with other men and women practicing prostitution, as well as users of injection drugs.
As of October 1, there were over 7,000 people in Moldova living with HIV/AIDS. 572 cases were diagnosed in the first nine months of this year.
