HIV/AIDS awareness-raising campaign for youth launched in Chisinau
A HIV/AIDS awareness-raising campaign for Moldovan young people titled “Pro Life – together towards a healthy life” was launched in Chisinau.
The campaign organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Orange Company will include
a number of cultural events such as radio and TV spots, concerts in Chisinau, Balti and Cahul held by the Moldovan stars Natalia Gordienco and Olia Tira, the bands “Gandul Matei” and “Cotton”. The film “Tranzit” will be shown in the Patria cinemas from the three towns. The entrance is free of charge.
Boris Galca, coordinator of UNFPA programmes in Moldova, said that the cultural events are intended to transmit messages on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and to change the erroneous opinion about the risk groups and the ways of transmitting HIV/AIDS.
During the “Pro Life” campaign, the organizers will launch public appeals to collect funds for the HIV-infected people. The cost of 5 MDL of an SMS sent to 7474 will be doubled by Orange. The raised funds will be given to the nongovernmental organizations that provide services for HIV-infected people and AIDS carriers so as to cover their basic necessities.
A study of attitudes, knowledge and behavior carried out in 2006 reveals that only 50.9% of the young people aged between 15 and 24 know how the HIV virus is transmitted and how the infection can be prevented.
Accoridng to official statistics, there are over 3,200 HIV-infected people in Moldova. By the number of new cases reported each year, Moldova places the third in the CIS, after Russia and Ukraine.
