Historians say government distorts significance of historical events of 1917-1918
The state authorities speculate about the identity of the majority population in Moldova and misrepresent the significance of the Union Act of 1918, vice chairman of the Association of Historians of Moldova Ion Negrei said on November 19. He stated that the Association will organize a number of events to mark the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Country’s Council (Sfatul Tarii).
Paradoxically, the discussion of certain historical subjects is restricted in a state that claims to be democratic. False information about the national history is spread in education establishments, by the print media and by public radio and television channels. The Romanian state’s policies in the interwar period are distorted and the Communist totalitarian regime is eulogized. By such actions, the government aims at annihilating the national consciousness of the Bessarabian Romanians, but the young generation should know the real history, Negrei said.
According to the cited source, the events that will take place on November 21 aim to inform the public about the created situation. There will be discussed such subjects as the historical education in Moldova, authorities’ attitude towards the language, history, culture etc. Negrei said that all the activities are part of the general plan for promoting the scientific truth about the language, history and culture of the autochthonous population living between the Prut and the Nistru.
Gheorghe Palade, chairman of the Association of Historians, said that new documents and information about the situation during 1917-1918 will be made public in an effort to fill the gap created in schools after the forced introduction of the integrated history course. The historians will present evidence that refutes the theses of the Soviet historiography revived in the pages of the new history textbooks that appeared by order of the current government.
On November 21, when it will be 90 years of the constitution of the Country’s Council, the Association of Historians will hold the symposium “Modification of Bessarabia’s Shape in 1917. Constitution of the Country’s Council”. On the same day, they will lay flowers at the cemetery “St. Lazar” and to the monument of Stephan the Great in downtown Chisinau. There will be inaugurated the thematic exhibition “The Country’s Council – 90 Years”.
