High temperatures favour an increased hail risk

The most intense processes of hail forming in the last 40 years are being registered in May and early June this year, according to experts in the Special Service for Active Influences upon the hydro meteorological processes. Ion Garaba, head of the Service, qualifies the end of May and beginning of June this year as a difficult period as regards the intensity of hail forming processes, as well as unusual, since it is not characteristic at all of this time period of the year. According to Garaba, the fact that anti hail missiles have been used by 4 up to 14 times more, depending on the regions, can be explained by thermal anomalies. The quoted source states that 7 processes characteristic of July were registered during May month of this year, and 3 processes of hail forming during the night time, characteristic of August , have been registered during the current month. The surface of the fields to be protected from hail has extended this year by almost 300 hectares, the total surface representing now over 1 million hectares. 21 districts of the country are included into the protection area.
