A helicopter of the MI-8 model registered in the Republic of Moldova was attacked in the district of Kajaki of Helmand Province in Afghanistan on January 25. This was transporting foods products as part of a humanitarian mission, IPN reports, with reference to the Civil Aviation Authority.
According to the Authority, the helicopter was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade while on ground. There were three crew members aboard. The commander and mechanical engineer, who are natives of Ukraine, were slightly injured, while the copilot from Moldova wasn’t hurt.
All the crew members were taken by another helicopter with Moldovan citizens on board. The injured persons were transported to the hospital for medical care. The two were later discharged and are now out of danger.
The Civil Aviation Authority said it is monitoring the conducted investigation and on January 27 will launch an unplanned inspection at airlines that operate flights outside Moldova to see if they respect the flight safety procedures.
