Several Democratic deputies and the administration of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia got into an altercation in the June 3 meeting of the Assembly. The Democrats demanded that the Assembly’s chairman Dmitry Constantinov resign. The videos posted on the portal gagauzinfo.md show that the altercation degenerated, IPN reports.
The police came and arrested the former head of Vulcanesti district Sergey Chernev. According to the local journalists, Chernev slapped Constantinov and kicked the Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal. The advisers of the two officials were unavailable for comment.
The General Police Inspectorate said that when one of the deputies of the People’s Assembly was speaking from the rostrum, a group of about 15-20 persons burst in, saying they want to attend the meeting. Another group of about 10 persons joined them later. The people behaved aggressively and insulted the members of the presidium. A report was draw up and evidence is being collected for making accusations of hooliganism.
Mihail Sirkeli, executive director of the Comrat Youth Center “Piligrim-Demo”, has told IPN that the misunderstandings in the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia appeared after the majority there modified. Two referendums on Moldova’s external development course and on Gagauzia’s right to self-determination were held in the region in February. The constitutional authorities declared them unconstitutional and a part of the Gagauz deputies were excluded from the Democratic Party. As a result, the majority in the People’s Assembly modified. The Democrats want Dmitry Constantinov to resign because in 2010 it was agreed that this post would be occupied by Demian Karaseni.
