Heart disease was leading cause of death among Chisinau residents last year
The heart diseases caused most of the deaths in the municipality of Chisinau in 2010. They were followed by malignant tumors, traumas and poisonings.
According to a report by the municipal Health Division, quoted by Info-Prim Neo, 55.6% of the deaths recorded in the municipality of Chisinau last year were caused by diseases of the cardiovascular system, which saw an upward trend compared with 2009. The malignant tumors accounted for 19% of the deaths, while the traumas and poisonings – for 6.8%.
In 2010, the perinatal mortality (stillbirths and early neonatal deaths) increased to 11.4 per 1,000 newborns, from 11.3 in 2009. But the infant death rate (deaths of babies under one year) decreased from 10.5 per 1,000 newborns to 8.9.
Eight newborn babies weighing less than 999 grams were saved last year even if the maternity hospitals experience a shortage of modern medical equipment for looking after such children.
