Hearings on BEM and Chisinau airport in Parliament lasted for 12 hours

The hearings held in Parliament on the situation of Banca de Economii (BRM) and the concession of the Chisinau International Airport lasted for almost 12 hours. The sitting closed at 21.25 without the approval of the draft decision on the hearings. The debates were interrupted by Speaker Igor Corman after the Communist MPs started to use loudspeakers, IPN reports.

The Liberal-Democratic and Democratic MPs insisted that the additional share issue at the BEM and the concession of the airport were legal and were in the country’s interests. Though the Communists repeatedly demanded, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca didn’t present himself in Parliament.

Lib-Dem Veaceslav Ionita said he regrets the hatred accompanying the debates as it scares the potential investors away. “The airport needs immediate investments of €50 million. I praise the Government for its ability to resist in this situation. Those from the opposition can be against the Government, but should not forget that they are thus against the people too,” he stated.

Communist MP Iurie Muntean said the only state-run bank was privatized in two weeks as if it was an easily alterable good. Investments of €250 million will be made during 49 years at the airport only if the number of passengers trebles. The Communists announced that they initiated the procedure for dismissing the Leanca Government and demanded annulling the decisions concerning the BEM and the Chisinau International Airport.

The head of the Democratic faction Dumitru Diacov said the people do not care if the bank is state or private. They only want to be sure that they deposited the money in a safe place.

Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu said the two transactions were obscure and they will find solutions to ensure the rule of law, while the Liberal reformers headed by Ion Hadarca said the measures taken at the BEM were right, not yet in the case of the airport.

As a result of a closed-type additional share issue at the BEM, the state remained with a blocking holding of 33% + 1 share in the bank, down from its earlier majority holding of 56.13%. The Chisinau airport was conceded to a Russian company from Habarovsk, which is to administer it for 49 years.
