Hearing in Shor case put off

The hearing in the case of the former president of the Administration Board of Banca de Economii Ilan Shor, which was set to take place at the Cahul Town Appeals Court on May 18, was postponed. The lawyers for Shor said they asked the court to give them at least 50 days to examine the case, but the court scheduled the next hearing for May 22, IPN reports.

“There is evident hurry to give a sentence in this case,” said lawyer Aureliu Kolenko. According to him, the judges are being influenced.

The lawyers also said that the judges of the Cahul Town Appeals Court today asked to remove the cameras of the press from the courtroom even if the court recently decided that the hearings in this case will be public.

In June 2017, Ilan Shor was sentenced to seven years and a half in jail for causing damage to the state by swindle and abuse of trust. The sentence was appealed and Shor was transferred from house arrest under judicial control. In February 2018, the case was transferred to the Cahul Town Appeals Court. In July 2019, immediately after the PDM conceded power, Ilan Shor fled Moldova in breach of the ban imposed of him. A new criminal case was started against him for illegally leaving the country. On August 15, 2019, Parliament decided to lift his parliamentary immunity.
