Health Ministry pleads for self-provision with blood products

The Ministry of Health said the country should supply itself with blood products. Currently, the relatives donate 71.75% of the blood in Moldova, while the volunteers 28.25%, of which only 10% are regular donors, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi. He presented the program on transfusion security and self-provision with blood products for 2012 -2016 that was approved by the Government. The minister said that the continuous development of the voluntary blood donation remains a priority of this program. The number of voluntary donors is expected to rise by 5% a year. This objective will be achieved by cooperating efficiently with civil society and state and community organizations and with the print and electronic media. According to Andrei Usatyi, the measures taken in 2007- 2012 helped outfit the Blood Transfusion Centers and, partially, the transfusion divisions with specialized equipment and modern consumables, contributing thus to the improvement of the quality and security of the blood products. The blood service in Moldova includes two specialized centers in Chisinau and Balti, 19 transfusion divisions and 49 transfusion offices. The program aims to strengthen the institutional capacities so as to meet the European standards concerning hemotransfusion assistance. It is important to supply the transfusion divisions and offices with containers for storing blood products. Special attention will be paid to the pre-transfusion tests so as to prevent the collection of blood from persons infected with viral hepatites B and C, HIV and syphilis. The personnel involved in providing hemotransfusion assistance will be trained.
