Health Ministry hopes TB will shrink in Moldova

In 2008, the number of registered tuberculosis cases slumped with 389, when compared to 2007 when 4,759 persons were registered as catching the disease. Health deputy minister Oleg Lozan Tuesday told a news conference, dedicated to the TB World Day, there are hopes Moldova will register a smaller number of TB patients in the forthcoming years, Info-Prim Neo reports. “If the sick observed the recommended treatment, and whole society brought in its responsibility, the TB incidence would wane,” Oleg Lozan has said. According to the deputy minister, migration favors the spread of tuberculosis. “The risk of catching the disease enhances since the people working abroad do not always have access to medical services,” the official pointed out. According to the statistics, in 2008 in Moldova, 780 people died of tuberculosis in 2008. Children have died of this disease for the last 3 years, too. Constantin Iavorschi, the deputy director of the Phthisis Institute, says late tracking TB cases leads to death. It takes $400-500 a year to treat a TB sick person. Physicians warn that tuberculosis can be prevented by prophylactic measures as vaccinating newborns, children and teenagers.
