The Republic of Moldova is heading for a new, much more aggressive wave of COVID-19. The non-vaccinated persons, primarily the older ones, are in danger, said the deputy head of the Health Division Boris Gîlca, being quoted by IPN.
In the meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council, Boris Gîlca pointed to the growing number of COVID-19 cases. “The people relaxed considerably and we will pay for this relaxation. Much more aggressive variants of the virus were reported in the region. They haven’t been yet confirmed in Moldova, but specialists say they definitely exist in our country. Even if we detect them, we cannot do something else as treatment is the same. We must only protect ourselves,” stated the official.
Two municipal institutions now serve persons with COVID-19 – the COVID-19 Triage Center at Moldexpo and Maternity Hospital No. 2 where pregnant women suspected of having or confirmed with COVID-19 are admitted.
As to vaccination, Boris Gîlca said Jonson&Jonson, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm and Sinovac are now available and a donation of Pfizer doses from Romania is expected to be shipped this weekend.
In the municipality of Chisinau, 55% of the teaching staff was vaccinated. This is a good indicator, but it should be yet raised to 70% until September 1 so that schools could welcome students in classrooms. The vaccination rate among medical staff in the municipality is of 96%.
The persons aged 16 and up should also be vaccinated. At the current stage, only Pfizer was approved globally for being administered to children aged 12 and up, concluded the official.
