Heads of states come together at GUAM Summit
On 22-23 May 2006, the Summit of the presidents of the GUAM states and the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of GUAM will be held in Ukraine. At the forum in Kiev is planned to discuss the implementation of GUAM projects in the field of transport, implementation of the Agreement on creating within GUAM the Free trade Zone, according to Ukrainian press reports.
Problems related to economy and commerce, energy and energy resources are to be examined, as well as other issues.
A mission of Moldovan businessmen will attend the forum. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Moldova initiate the organization of the mission.
According to sources within CCI, the group will participate at the meetings of GUAM Business Council and Moldovan-Ukrainian Business Council. Besides businessmen, representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Customs Services of participant countries, national and regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry will also take part in the meetings of the business councils. At the meeting will be discussed the current situation and perspectives of commercial-economic relations and regional and bilateral investment situation, the ways of passing up obstacles in free trade, information exchange, and exhibition activity. The agenda of the business councils includes as well organizing meetings between businessmen of both countries.
GUAM creation was announced in autumn 1997 by the presidents of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, who have concluded in Strasbourg an intention declaration. On 25 April 1999, in Washington, while celebrating 50 years since NATO’s creation, Uzbekistan joined GUAM, the organization changing its name into GUUAM. In May 2005, soon after GUAM summit in Chisinau, Uzbekistan announced its withdrawal form the organization.
