The Soros Foundation Moldova should act as a lighthouse of democracy, a reliable partner that promotes and defends a just and healthy society. This is the priority of the foundation created by George Soros and was announced in a meeting with President Maia Sandu. The meeting was also attended by the executive director for Europe and Eurasia of the Open Society Foundations Daniela Schwarzer, who underlined the necessity of establishing cooperation relations between the authorities and civil society, IPN reports.
The Open Society Foundations and the Soros Foundation Moldova during over ten years have supported the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. In the discussions with President Sandu, Soros Foundation Moldova executive director Petru Culeac and executive director for Europe and Eurasia of the Open Society Foundations Daniela Schwarzer spoke about the prospects of the assistance that civil society can offer to the authorities.
Petru Culeac said that one of the most recent successful partnerships between the authorities and civil society in this field was in spring when the Soros Foundation Moldova supported the activity of 15 experts who took part in the filling out of the EU accession questionnaire. “We remain fully deposed to support the authorities that act swiftly and determinedly in the Europeans integration process,” stated the executive director of the Soros Foundation Moldova.
For her part, Daniela Schwarzer welcomed the Republic of Moldova’s participation in the creation of the European Political Community. “An ambitious community will enable to ensure profound strategic cooperation, a more flexible decision-making process at European level, which would offer financial resources broader cooperation in terms of energy and climate, security and defense and also economic and social convergence,” said the representative of Open Society Foundations.
The Soros Foundation Moldova is part if the Open Society Foundations group founded by George Soros.
