Head of state opens consultations to identify candidate for premiership

President Nicolae Timofti is initiating consultations for designating a candidate for Prime Minister. The President’s spokesman Vlad Turcanu said that invitations were sent to all the parliamentary factions and unaffiliated lawmakers. A candidate is to be nominated this week. The consultations will be held behind closed doors, IPN reports.

This is the second attempt to identify a candidate for premiership. Asked by the Liberal Party to pronounce on the constitutionality of the President’s decree nominating ex-Liberal-Democratic Premier Vlad Filat for this post, the Constitutional Court ruled that it was unconstitutional. The Communist Party didn’t take part in the previous consultations.

The Filat Government was dismissed by a censure motion on March 5. After the Constitutional Court passed its judgment on April 22, the post of interim Premier was taken up by Iurie Leanca, on April 25. According to political analyst Viorel Cibotaru, the fielding of Iurie Leanca for the post of Prime Minister is inevitable. He said that Iurie Leanca is a professional who is accepted by the other components of the former ruling alliance.
