President Nicolae Timofti on May 23 had a meeting with the delegation of the Group of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament that is in Moldova on a fact-finding visit. The MEPs inquired about the implementation of reforms in justice and the fight against corruption, these being the main preoccupations of the political group, IPN reports.
According to the presidential press service, the Head of State approved of the constant assistance provided by the Group of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament in promoting the commitments assumed by Moldova at community level. He assured that the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU remains a national priority of the Republic of Moldova and of his term in office.
In the same connection, Nicolae Timofti thanked the EPP members for their contribution to facilitating the dialogue between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova on the liberalization of the visa regime for Moldovan citizens. “This is the most powerful argument in favor of supporting our country on the path of European integration in our aspiration to become part of the big European family,” he stated.
The MEPs inquired about the implementation of reforms in the justice sector and the fight against corruption, these being the main preoccupations of the Group of the European People’s Party. In connection with this autumn’s presidential elections, the interlocutors voiced hope that these will take place in conditions of equity and political pluralism. The MEPs expressed their readiness to contribute to ensuring objective and correct elections.
The Group of the European People’s Party is the largest in the European Parliament. It brings together the pro-European political forces of the center and the center-right of the EU member states.
