President Nicolae Timofti on October 19 had separate meetings with the parliamentary groups of the PLDM, PDM and PL, which formed the Alliance for European-3, IPN reports. According to the presidential press service, the discussions centered on the sociopolitical situation and the recent arrest of the Liberal-Democratic heavyweight Vlad Filat on charges of corruption and influence peddling, which generated disputes inside the government coalition.
Nicolae Timofti requested the three parliamentary groups to find the consensus needed to maintain the pro-European coalition, being assured that these will make effort to maintain the current alliance. The discussions also focused on the further reformation of the law enforcement bodies and other public institutions that ensure constitutional order and respect for the legal norms.
After the October 15 sitting of Parliament, where Vlad Filat was deprived of parliamentary immunity by the votes of 79 MPs, this was placed under arrest for 72 hours. Afterward, the warrant for his arrest for extended for 30 days. Anticorruption prosecutors accuse the Lib-Dem of passive corruption and influence peddling.
