President Nicolae Timofti expressed his dissatisfaction with the way in which the munitions of the National Army are kept. He made related statements after the December 14 meeting of the Defense Ministry’s Collegial Board, which centered on the work of the National Army in 2012, Info-Prim Neo reports. “I’m not satisfied with the conditions in which some of the munitions are kept. The National Army officers are not appropriately provided with dwellings. This is a reason for concern. We are looking for solutions and hope that the problem will be solved,” said the head of state. He also said that the level of discipline among officers and soldiers is not satisfactory. He referred to the cases of ill-treatment. “A lot depends on the officer. If he organizes the work with the soldiers well so that they know they have to obey the regulations, it is very easy,” stated Nicolae Timofti. As regards the keeping of munitions, Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta admitted that the storage conditions are not the best, but the National Army is taking measures to improve the situation. “Together with the OSCE, we are taking steps to build a new storeroom. We already implemented a project to repair the roofs of most of the armament storehouses. The Ministry’s proposals to destroy the obsolete munitions or to sell them are aimed at diminishing the risks posed by them,” he said. Speaking about the living conditions, the minister said that dwellings for servicemen will start to be erected in 2013 within a public-private partnership project. Under the project, the Ministry will allocate a plot of 1.24 hectares. The partner is to be designated by spring. The construction works will start afterward. There are about 1.100 servicemen who are entitled to dwellings provided by the state. Vitalie Marinuta also said that servicemen’s pay is the most serious problem of the National Army and adjusting them is one of the goals set for 2013. Another goal is to ensure social conditions of a higher level for servicemen.
