President Nicolae Timofti announced that he was blackmailed by the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu. In the program “Politics” on TV7, he stated that Mihai Ghimpu threatened him that he will make public the case of dissident Gheorghe David if Vlad Filat is fielded for premiership. Gheorghe David was obliged to receive treatment at a psychiatric hospital in 1987 under a decision passed by Nicolae Timofti, who was then judge at the Supreme Court, IPN reports.
“He threatened and blackmailed me. I think this is ill will. It is not manly to do such politics and to make accusations when it is convenient for you. If he knew this case, he should have made it public then, not to have a card up the sleeve, as he likes to say,” said the head of state.
Nicolae Timofti also said that Mihai Ghimpu demanded that he resign on different occasions. “I understood that this is his method of doing politics. I want to remind him that I was named to the post at his proposal and the proposal of other leaders of the alliance. I agreed to become head of state in order to maintain the alliance and to help implement the European integration program,” he stated.
After the case of Gheorghe David was made public, Nicolae Timofti issued a public letter, saying he regrets that episode. He said he was convinced then that he acted in accordance with the law, based on the evidence provided by the prosecutor’s office of the MSSR, which included a medical certificate showing that Gheorghe David was mentally ill and needed treatment. “I today regret that I had to implement a law that is inhuman by its essence. As a judge, I have nothing to reproach myself for. But, as a human, I can say that I was wrong,” Nicolae Timofti wrote in the letter.
