Head of EU Delegation speaks about opportunities and challenges of Association Agreement

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola warned that besides enjoying opportunities from signing the Association Agreement, Moldova will also have to face challenges. The statement was made in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

The European diplomat said the Moldovans should not expect wonders to take place overnight following the signing the Association Agreement, which will be in fact a framework for the successful implementation of important reforms for a better life.

Pirkka Tapiola praised the Government of Moldova for the fantastic results achieved in doing reforms, but underlined that it should be more responsible and that it has yet a lot of work to do. “The fact that the April 2009 events haven’t been yet elucidated after five years and that those who tortured weren’t convicted shows there are problems concerning the reformation of the law enforcement system,” he stated.

He also said that the accord will offer the Moldovan producers greater opportunities on the European market, but they must know that only products of a high quality that meet the sanitary norms will be accepted.

In the same connection, the EU representative warned the Moldovan citizens not to use the right to travel freely in the European Union for becoming illegally employed as they will be banned from entering the EU for a long period of time.

Pirkka Tapiola denied Russian authorities’ assertions that the separatist Transnistrian region faces a blockade on the part of Moldova and Ukraine. “There is trade and the Transnistrians can travel freely. We cannot thus speak about a blockage,” he stated.
