Head of Border Police asks MAEIE to reassess status of diplomatic passports

Border Police Head Rosian Vasiloi is asking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MAEIE) to reassess the status of issued diplomatic passports. Additionally, information is requested about the diplomatic passports whose holders are no longer in official positions but failed to return them, IPN reports.

The request comes in light of recent incidents where the Border Police detected several former MPs and dignitaries who crossed the border using diplomatic passports, “which complicates work.” Rosian Vasiloi notes in a Facebook post that, per the Law on Border Police, any invalid documents presented for border formalies, as well as those that do not belong to the holder, must be seized.

Moreover, according to the Law on identity documents in the national passport system, the right to hold a diplomatic or service passport arises from the moment of appointment or election and ceases when the term of office ends.

Among the officials entitled to diplomatic passports are the head of state, the speaker, the prime minister, their spouses, MPs, members of the diplomatic corps and other holders of high-profile public offices.
