Harsher penalties for speeding drivers take effect July 6

Drivers who break the traffic rules, including exceed the legal speed limit and do not give way to pedestrians or cyclists, will be penalized harsher. Depending on the gravity of violations and if these are repeated, they can be stripped of the driver’s license. The new provisions come into force on July 6, IPN reports.

Drivers who will not give legal way to pedestrians or cyclists face fines of up to 1,800 lei and five penalty points. If the same violation is committed again during the same year, the fine will rise to 2,500 lei and the person will be banned from driving for a period of 30 to 45 days. So far drivers were punished with a fine of 900 to 1,500 lei and four penalty points for this violation

If the legal speed limit is exceeded by 40km/hour, the fine will be 1,500 to 1,800 lei and five penalty points will be imposed. Going faster by 60-80 km/hour over the legal limit will be punished with a fine of 2,250 to 2,500 lei and ban on driving for a period of 30 to 45 days, by 80 km/hour and more – 3,750 to 5,000 lei and ban on driving for a period of 60 to 90 days

Drivers will be fined 5,000 to 7,500 lei and will be banned from driving for a period of 90 to 120 days if they exceed the allowed speed limit by 60-80 km/h again in the course of the same year. Respectively, they will be punished with a fine of 7,500 to 10,000 lei and ban on driving for a period of 120 to 180 days if they exceed the speed limit by 80 km/h and more again in the course of the same year.

Under the new provisions, driving a vehicle that is not registered as required or is not subject to technical overhaul will be punished with a fine of 460 to 600 lei, but without imposing the three penalty points.

For not respecting the priority road signs, markings to give way on the roadway, drivers will be warned or will be fined 500 to 600 lei and will get two penalty points. Until now the penalty was a fine of 750 to 1,500 lei and three penalty points.

For stopping or parking in banned places, drivers face the same fine as now - 900 to 1,500 lei - but the four penalty points will no longer be imposed.
