Half of deaths of 1-4-year-old children are because traumas

The traumas are the main cause of the children aged from 1 to 4 in Moldova, as the toll I rising. One of the reason is that parents do not always take properly care of their children, Info-Prim Neo has learnt from UNICEF Moldova. In 2007, almost half of the deaths of children at that age were caused by traumas and poisonings. Of those, a quarter was because of road accidents, 16% – because of intoxication and 13.6% – because of other types of accidents preventing the children to breathe. “Every case of death is accompanied by hundreds of cases of hospitalization, as dozens of children remain disabled for life,” says the coordinator of a program on equitable access to quality services of UNICEF Moldova, Svetlana Stefanet. “All these cases can be prevented through special programs, through intervention by policies, services, but especially by informing parents, so as to offer the children safety at home, in community and at school,” she added. Over 2,000 children die daily because of unintentional traumas in the world, as tens of millions of children reach hospitals annually because of traumas often making disabled for life, reads a report launched on December 10, by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The report shows that 95% of these cases are registered in developing countries. The first five cases of deaths among children are the road crashes, drowning, fires, falls and intoxications. The report suggests that the traumas can be prevented through laws providing for using safety belts and special helmets for children, thermo-regulating hot water taps, boxes for medicines not allowing the children’s access and special road lanes for bikes.
