The Republic of Moldova has 63 nature reserves. The oldest of them is “Codri” reserve that was founded in 1971 and is 5,177 hectares in area. There, there are almost 1,000 types of protected plans, which is half of the flora typical of Moldova. The data were presented by the State Weather Service in connection with World Nature Reserves Day that is celebrated on January 11, IPN reports.
The nature reserves are protected natural areas that are valuable form scientific viewpoint. The nature reserves in Moldova are considered natural monuments of international importance with a wide variety of exclusive landscapes.
Besides “Codri” reserve, “Pădurea Domnească” is another important reserve. It was founded in 1993 with the aim of keeping the riverside coppices and protecting rare plants and animals.
The reserve “Lower Prut” was established in 1991 and is 1,691 hectares in area. The lake Beleu occupies about two thirds of the reserve’s territory. The rest of the area is occupied by the river meadow. Researches showed the lake Beleu can be considered a natural ecological laboratory in this reserve.
Founded in 1991 to protect the beech woods, the reserve “Plaiul Fagului” occupies the northwestern part of the Codri Forest. It is 5,642 hectares in area and the woods occupy 4,639 hectares of these.
“Iagorlâc” is a reserve established in 1988 on an area of 836 hectares of dry land and 270 hectares of water.
