Guțul makes appeal to Putin and Erdogan

The Bashkan of Gagauzia Evgenia Guțul, who was arrested on Tuesday evening by NAC officers, addressed letters to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whereby she complains that a political case was fabricated against her, IPN reports.

In her letter to the Russian leader, the Bashkan says that her detention is only a link "in a cynical and broad campaign of the central authorities of the Republic of Moldova, aimed at destroying the Gagauz Autonomous Unit."

Evgenia Guțul calls on Vladimir Putin to use the entire arsenal of mechanisms – diplomatic, political and legal - to put pressure on the Moldovan authorities in order to immediately stop the political repression and to obtain her release.

In the letter addressed to President Erdogan, the Bashkan says that she is held in a fabricated case, with invented accusations. According to Evgenia Guțul, these actions are part of a large-scale campaign aimed at destroying the foundations of the Gagauz Autonomous Unit.

On Evgenia Guțul's social networking sites, where the two letters were published, it is stated that these were sent through lawyers.

Evgenia Guțul was arrested on Tuesday evening at Chisinau Airport, from where she intended to take a flight to Istanbul, Turkey. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, she appears in the information systems on the no-fly list, which is why the border guards informed the competent authorities about her intention to leave the country. The Bashkan’s plan to leave the Republic of Moldova without returning is also considered as a version. Currently, Guțul is in the custody of the NAC.

After the arrest, fugitive convict Ilan Shor said that such actions are a crime. Supporters of the Bashkan were gathered together in front of the National Anticorruption Center, despite the fact that it was late and raining. A demonstration was staged in Comrat on Wednesday, where protesters demanded that Evgenia Guțul should be released. Among the demonstrators who came in front of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia were many people who also took part in previous protests - supporters of Ilan Shor.
