Gurbulea to appear before court on April 26

The first hearing in the case opened against former Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea at the insistence of the head of the Chisinau Division for Children's Rights Protection Svetlana Chifa will take place on April 26. The decision was taken by the Buiucani District Court at a meeting on March 23, where the parties were to be informed about the accusations and other aspects. Valeriu Gurbulea did not come. He was represented by his lawyer Pavel Midrigan, Info-Prim Neo reports. Svetlana Chifa seeks damages of 200,000 lei from the former prosecutor general for publicly accusing her of involvement in a child trafficking scheme without waiting for the court decision first. “I was accused of acts that I did not do. The damages will be used for charity not personal purposes. I want that this person knows what it is like to be accused groundlessly,” Svetlana Chifa said Tuesday. Viorel Savva, lawyer for Svetlanei Chifa, said he will prove that the the principle of presumption of innocence and procedural rules were violated. Svetlana Chifa says the case started against her was a 'buffoonery' orchestrated by the former administration of the Prosecutor's Office. She demands that Valeriu Gurbulea refute the statements he made in a news conference in January 2009. The lawyer of the former prosecutor Pavel Midrigan said he will express his position on this case after he studies the materials in detail. Svetlana Chifa was put under arrest for 72 hours on January 13, 2009 and then under house arrest for 30 days. When the term expired, the Centru District Court banned her from leaving the country. The examination of the case was postponed until April 5, but there was no trial. In a news conference on January 15, 2009, Valeriu Gurbulea said Svetlana Chifa was suspected of abuse of power and criminal interests in organizing international adoption. “Chifa organized a criminal scheme which I'd rather call not international adoption, but a terribly cynical, legally disguised form of trafficking in children. A network of persons was employed to find the healthiest children, to invent cover stories making these children badly sick and thus rendering them ineligible for domestic adoption. Big pots of money were involved in every case”, said Gurbulea.
