Gunfire in Chisinau, young man wounded by police officer

A man aged 28 was rushed to the hospital after he was shot in the leg by a police officer in Botanica district of Chisinau in the morning of July 8.

Contacted by phone by IPN’s reporter, the head of the Chisinau Police Division’s press service Adrian Jovmir said the police travelled to a place located on Cuza-Voda St after a young woman informed that she was robbed. When on the spot, the police saw a group of aggressive young men arguing with the place’s guard. When the policemen intervened, one of the young men went to his car and brought a pistol.

One of the police officers tried to stop the young man, but this continued to insult the policemen and aimed the pistol at them. The police officer fired a warning shot, but the man refused to yield his gun. He was thus shot in the leg. He was given first aid and was taken to the hospital.

Romeo Shcherbina, press officer of the Chisinau Emergency Hospital, has told IPN that the patient was admitted to the traumatology section with a wound in the left femur. He may be subject to surgery.

The prosecutors are to start a criminal case.
