The Chisinau Court of Appeals quashed the Centru district court's decision to arrest the former Chisinau police chief Iacob Gumenita, placing him under house arrest, Info-Prim Neo reports. Iacob Gumenita is held at the remand unit of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime. He did not attend the April 22 hearing at the Court of Appeals. His lawyer Ion Vazdoaga said his client is ill and asked that he be put under house arrest. Prosecutor Ion Buliga insisted that the Centru district court's decision should be upheld. “As he held an important position, we consider that Iacob Gumenita can influence the investigation, the witnesses and police officers who can help clarify many aspects of this case,” he said. Ion Vazdoaga said the decision to place Iacob Gumenita under house arrest is humane. “My client will be investigated on the outside as he needs appropriate medical care,” he said. Iacob Gumenita was arrested for ten days on April 15. On April 19, he was charged with misconduct in office on the night of April 8, 2009. The pictures taken by the video cameras from the Government Building show Gumenita kicking young protesters in Chisinau's central square on April 8. The Prosecutor's Office can ask for the extension of the arrest warrant.
