GUAM requests UN to examine state of frozen conflicts from member states

GUAM Members (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) have requested again the General Assembly of the United Nations to add to the daily schedule a point regarding existing conflicts in member states and the consequences and threats to the international peace, security and development that these conflicts entail. Lengthy conflicts from the Republic of Moldova, Georgia and Azerbaijan continue to influence the lives of almost 16 million persons, and have endangered for over one and a half decades the international peace and security, and posed threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the 3 UN member states, the letter states. The document also mentions that the conflicts could result in the loss of a significant part of the territory, leading to millions of refugees and to the economical and social stagnation of the region. According to the signers, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and the Republic of Moldova, the international input in solving the conflicts did not provide any results, and this is why this matter should be discussed at the 61st session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, which will take place on September 12. A similar request made last year by GUAM did not obtain support from the majority of members of the General Committee. Of the 28 members, only Azerbaijan, USA and the UK voted pro. Russia, Armenia, Angola, Myanmar and Venezuela opposed, and the rest abstained.
