Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased only by 5% in the first semester of 2006.

The regress of this index concerns the head of state, who convoked a meeting on identifying possibilities for ensuring a constant increase of GDP. Decision making authorities from the Government, ministers of Finance and Agriculture and Food Industry, as well as the head of the Parliamentary Committee for Budget and Finance participated in the meeting. According to a press release of the Presidency, Igor Dodon, the minister of Economy and Commerce declare that the slow up of the growth paces of GDP is linked to external factors, including restrictions at the export of Moldovan production. However, the minister says that the increase in the first semester exceeded the forecasts made after the increase in price of the natural gas and introduction of bans on wine exports. In order to ensure a sustainable increase of GDP, the president Vladimir Voronin asked to undertake measures which would include applying a proper investment policy, as well as actions related to diminishing the share of unobserved economy. The head of state mentioned, as well, that despite the increase of the Gross Domestic Product during the last 5 years, the level of 1991 was not reached yet. The president pleads in favor of creating a plan directed towards reestablishing the amount of that period’s GDP. In the end of 2005, the increase of the Gross Domestic Product in the Republic of Moldova constituted 7.1%.
